What Is Farmhouse Style?

Even if you’re not directly familiar with farmhouse style and farmhouse colors, chances are you have experienced them in recent years. The farmhouse style has had a resurgence in the past few years. Color consultants are asked about the farmhouse style frequently, and with good reason!

Many weddings are now set in farmhouses themselves or use the farmhouse motif. Home interiors and exteriors are using farmhouse colors, and even furniture stores have started marketing and selling farmhouse or vintage style furniture.

The whole idea behind the farmhouse style is to orchestrate a space that is warm, inviting, relaxing, charming and authentic. Practicality is a large component of the farmhouse trend. Farmhouse style does not incorporate delicate and austere items, nor should it look like everything is designed/purchased in one fell swoop. Farmhouse style is dependent on piecing things together from older eras with newer ones.

Farms were originally decorated with whatever items families could get their hands on – hence the trends of using empty jam jars, old wooden barrels and farming related tools and paraphernalia to decorate the home.

The Farmhouse style is rightly popular these days, but it is somewhat difficult to produce the look authentically. Like I had mentioned before, it would look cheesy and unauthentic to buy “old-looking” decor during a shopping trip to Target and expect to have a tasteful farmhouse style.

What Is Farmhouse Color?

The color choices used in farmhouse style works to create contrast between textured surfaces. The most notable feature of a farmhouse color palette is a soft-warm neutral base juxtaposed against subtle accent hues and naturally occurring textures.

For example, in a farmhouse style kitchen, the walls are painted with a warm off-white color, contrasted with exposed/reclaimed wood accent furniture.

Warm accent colors like soft yellows, grays, deep blues and light greens are used on cabinetry and trim to create a warm, welcoming and seasoned look to the space.

As a color expert, I personally love how farmhouse colors are all about slowing down the pace of a room and relaxing where you are. No wonder it’s so popular!

The farmhouse design scheme lends itself perfectly to fall and fall colors. Try these five fall farmhouse-inspired design ideas to get yourself in the best of fall moods!

1. Pair Reclaimed Wood With Your Farmhouse Color

Incorporating textures and surfaces is a pivotal piece of farmhouse design, so using some reclaimed wood to decorate a wall, use as shelving, or even incorporate as furniture can make all the difference in a space.

2. Incorporate Weathered Surfaces and Finishes

Rough wood, peeling paint, powder-coated aluminum, it’s all about creating a “worn” and practical look. Not every surface in a farmhouse styled space should be the same or overly-polished.

Let the textures and surfaces of furniture, tools and decor tell their story and add some atmosphere.

3. Add-In Some Autumnal Accessories

Pumpkins, fall garland, bright orange oak leaves from your afternoon walk and even some cinnamon sticks do wonders as small but mighty fall accent colors. These simple nature-focused decor ideas will bring fall into your home and accent your house with an autumnal farmhouse vibe.

Add them to your kitchen, mantle, or even mudroom to add some wonderful brown, orange, yellow and deep reds to accent to your space.

4. Use the Power of Patterns and Plaid

A lot of people unconsciously associate plaid with a homey feel, fall and farming. Whether you are using a red and black buffalo check, a small check of white with another color, a houndstooth, tartan or gingham, every one of these reminds us of days gone by.

I suggest including a plaid somewhere to bring that classic charm into your design. You can easily add in some colorful plaid throw pillows, dish rags, wool blankets, or table clothes to give a room the cozy fall/farmhouse colorful plaid vibe!

Patterns work beautifully alongside a plaid. Use them together to bring out the warm colors of your home!

5. Candles, Lights and Lanterns, Oh My!

Some of my favorite memories of fall are of sitting outside and breathing in the freshly-crisp air while looking at the stars.

We can bring a little of that sensation into our homes with some string lights scattered in a greenhouse or mudroom. Old oil lanterns look wonderfully charming when sitting on your dining room table, mantle, or end table.

Candles — you can’t have too many candles during the fall as far as I’m concerned! Lighting a few soft candles at night sets the cozy vibe and helps reinforce the timeless/practical tone of the farmhouse style.
