Tell me this, what’s better than spending relaxing time in a beautiful backyard during the spring!? The flowers are blooming, pine and oak trees have come back from a dormant state, and the birds are chirping to greet the new season! It’s just such a wonderful feeling to have an accessible and sunny backyard.
When a home’s backyard is in full use, it’s like adding additional living spaces to your home. There’s suddenly a new space to host guests, cook dinner, and of course, design with color!
As an exterior paint color consultant, I love to find outdoor color arrangements that make the most out of any space. In this article, I will talk about how colorful backyards, designed with color-inspiration, can do wonders to a backyard space, regardless of the size! I will also suggest some designs and color arrangements to make the most of your outdoor space!
Plant Life
Suppose you find your backyard or back patio lacking in color and dimension; a quick and fulfilling way to add some dynamic color hues to your backyard is to add some plant life. By adding some flora and accompanying accessories to your backyard, an entirely new breath of life can be brought to the area without the need for construction.
There are two significant advantages to adding plantlife to your backyard. The first and most obvious is the colors and presence the plants bring to the yard itself. Whether they are annuals or perennials, plants add life and natural beauty to your backyard.
The other advantage to adding plant life to your backyard is the plant containers (pots) themselves can be arranged to showcase color too! You don’t have to use the standard clay-colored plant pot you get at the nursery; there are many shapes and sizes plant containers come in. With some color strategy in mind, the plant containers themselves can create a strong, foundational color palette from which to base the rest of your backyard on!
Breezy and Light Pops of Color!
A backyard with rich deep wood fencing and pergolas is a very esteemed feeling, but sometimes a pop of color adds a little bit of levity and joy to the backyard. After all, a backyard shouldn’t be taking itself too seriously. It’s where the fun happens!
If you’re on your enclosed or exposed patio, try adding a light outdoor rug. Picture a mint green or robin’s egg blue outdoor area rug under a beautiful new table. A few colorful throw pillows add to the fun as well. Without the need for a structural overhaul, some pops of color here and there make a great difference in the tone of your backyard!

Distressed Surfaces Juxtaposed to Color
Colorful backyards need a balance of light and dark and rich colors with lighter colors. A great way to create a dynamic look to the outdoor dining is to highlight the beauty of distressed, weathered wood against whimsical and rich accent colors.
Picture a thick and regal outdoor dining table made of oak, as an example. It’s not slathered in vanish or stain but weathered to a deep earthy gray by the environment around it. It’s beautiful and unique in its own right. You would not want to disregard its natural patina, but you can highlight it by surrounding the table with teal blue or tangerine yellow chairs with a matte finish. The contrast between textures and colors works incredibly well to embolden each piece of furniture! This color cooperation is what color experts call a home run when it’s executed well.

Colorful Backyards – Fence Art
A backyard fence can have lots of untapped potential to make an effortlessly color-inspired space! Whether you have a beautiful hardwood fence with wood grain worth showing off or a fence that is better suited for painting with color, fences can add to the design of your outdoor space.
If you’re not enamored with the presence of your backyard fence itself, there are some artistic design solutions. An ingenious design idea to consider is to use your backyard fence as a “canvas” to showcase some backyard wall art! Picture hanging terra-cotta plant pots along your fence in a patterned arrangement; amazing! Or, hang decorative ivy-lanterns along the fence. There are many ways to turn a so-so-looking fence into a colorful backyard art display!
