Living Room Wall Decor Ideas: Let Your Personality Shine!

Not every interior or exterior design change must be a monumental project. As a color specialist, I like providing people with design suggestions and tips that homeowners can accomplish in an afternoon; sometimes, we just need a quick hit of color inspiration to change up our environment.

The living room is a space that can become stale fast; once we have chosen furniture and lighting, it tends to be neglected as we move on to decorating other rooms. Sometimes I think that’s the perfect time to step back and take a second look, think about giving the room a spark or unexpected something, somewhere! Updating your living room wall decor is a quick way to bring new elements and new life into the space!

In this blog, I will provide you with some interior design suggestions to help you liven up (pardon the pun) your living room!

What is Wall Decor?

Wall decor is simply interior furnishings placed on the wall via whatever means the designer finds necessary. (Sounds a little boring already!) I like to think of wall decor as an opportunity for homeowners to really share a piece of themselves with all visitors to the space, almost like wall decor can be a peek inside someone’s tastes, interests, hidden talents, hobbies, or even past accomplishments. Wall decor does wonders to help present the emotional intentions of the space. In the case of the living room, wall decor helps set the mood as people relax and enjoy whatever entertainment or task they’re partaking in.

It can also set the stage. Imagine photos of exotic vacations, woven elements hung on the wall, or even bold, dramatic paintings that grab your attention. The wall decor can tell the story of the homeowner being a worldwide traveler or talented artist, both conversation starters for sure!

Living Room Wall Decor Ideas – Functionality Doesn’t Need to Sacrifice Design.

The living room has a broad set of uses for different people. Many define it as space for general, everyday, practical use, which can mean different things for different families. The living room is a place for some to read, maybe even work if they don’t have a dedicated workspace. For others, the living room serves as the entertainment space, where the television and even stereo system may reside. For others, it’s where they show off their art collection, which is something they are very proud of.

Regardless of the living room’s type of use, most will agree that the living room sees LOTS of foot traffic. My goal with this piece is to help people realize that the design elements of the space shouldn’t be uninspired just because the area sees lots of practical use. It is an opportunity to be creative and think outside the box!

Living Room Wall Decor Ideas – What Can Go on the Wall?

Choosing living room wall decor is so much fun! You’ve got a blank canvas to show your tastes, passions, and personal history! Here are some wall decor pieces I tell clients are best suited for the living room:

  • Wall Clocks

A wall clock is a tried and true utility and statement design piece for a living room. A wall clock centered prominently in the space has a powerful presence, but it can also set the stage for other wall decor elements to be arranged around it or shelves below it. Whether a vintage design neon clock or a modern minimalist piece, a wall clock is a great starting point for living room wall decor.

  • Wood Shelving

Shelving is an incredibly useful living room wall decor idea, and depending on what materials are used, the shelves themselves can be eyecatching. I love the look of natural, unadulterated wood shelving; it’s particularly popular in minimalist and farmhouse design styles. The wood juxtaposed to a calm, neutral base wall paint is rustic and charming. Even better, homeowners can add biophilic design, pieces of art, or even unique collectibles like pop art figurines to the shelving to provide some insight into their tastes!

  • Photographs

This type of wall decor is probably the most popular as homeowners love displaying photos of their family members or even presenting artistically-inspired photography. My only critique of wall photos is that choosing photos with similar tones, content, and even shape is important to keep the arrangement consistent. When it comes to photos, it’s great to see family members that are important to you; framing photos of them is like sharing them with your company!

  • Art

The living room wall is an area with great potential to display paintings, murals, tapestries, metal sculptures, etc. You name it; if you have art that can be hung, it’s best served on the wall than packed away in the attic! However, keep in mind the color lessons that I often repeat, do not hang art that clashes with the space’s schemes, tones, and intentions! Source art that compliments the space, not compete with it.

I have a wall in my living room that contains some of the art I own and love, glass plates, and other items of wall decor. All of it, though not identical, works together from a color standpoint. It’s the favorite wall in my home.

  3. It is SO important that a room reflect the personality of the owners…that is what make a house a home and not just a furniture showroom. I love these suggestions for adding personality to the walls, Amy. In my own rooms I have collected plates and art and needlework on my walls.
