I’ve always loved how metallic colors can bring something special to a room. We often think of color in terms of painted walls, upholstery, or furnishings, but metallic finishes add an entirely different dimension. Metallics interact with light, create beautiful reflections, and add a richness that traditional colors alone can’t achieve.
One of my favorite metallics is brass; its golden tones feel warm and inviting, and depending on the finish, brass can look beautifully traditional or surprisingly contemporary; it’s very flexible! You can incorporate brass as a permanent part of your home’s design or introduce it through smaller decorative accents that can change with your tastes.
As a color consultant, I love finding ways to use metallics in a space without allowing them to overwhelm everything else. Whether you’re considering an entire wall of shimmering tile or just a few beautiful accessories, brass home decor can bring warmth, sparkle, and personality into your home!
Gold and brass have been used in interiors for centuries, but I think their appeal goes beyond the sense of luxury we often associate with these metals. Their warmer coloring complements many of the neutrals we already have in our homes, particularly creams and natural wood tones. Brass can also offer a beautiful contrast against deeper colors. Navy blue, charcoal, forest green, and even rich burgundy can feel more inviting when paired with warm metallic finishes.
Something else I appreciate is how the surface of the metal influences the overall effect. Highly polished brass reflects light and immediately draws attention, while brushed or aged brass has a softer look that feels more understated. Even hammered brass introduces texture, creating subtle variations in how light moves across its surface.

Sometimes I encourage homeowners to look beyond decorative accessories and consider incorporating metallics directly into a space’s architecture. Brass and gold-toned tile can be absolutely beautiful in bathrooms, kitchens, and other areas where you want the surrounding surfaces to make a statement. Unlike a painted wall, metallic tile introduces movement and reflection. As the lighting changes throughout the day, the surface can appear softer or brighter, making the space feel alive!
I particularly love the idea of using metallic tile in a bathroom. A rich golden surface can transform an otherwise ordinary space into something wonderfully memorable, especially when paired with a classic white bathtub or simple porcelain fixtures. This approach reminds me of something I’ve discussed when exploring bold bathroom colors. Bathrooms can feel like little jewel boxes within the home, letting us be more adventurous with colors, finishes, and decorative details!
Of course, a permanent installation requires more consideration than purchasing a beautiful accessory. Tile, built-in architectural elements, and other lasting finishes become part of the room’s character for years to come. That’s why I believe it’s important to consider how the metallic surface will work with the flooring, cabinetry, fixtures, and surrounding colors before committing.

Lighting is one of my favorite ways to incorporate brass into a room because it combines the beauty of metallics with something every home needs. Brass pendant lights can warm up a contemporary kitchen, while a decorative chandelier can add a touch of elegance to a dining room.
I love how brass lighting complements minimalist interiors. In a room with clean lines and simple furnishings, a warm metallic fixture can add personality and a sense of welcome, without disrupting the overall design. I’ve explored the importance of warm interior lighting before, and I think brass fixtures are an excellent example of how lighting and color can work together to create a welcoming atmosphere.
If you have followed my blog over the years, you know I cover everything from decorative accents to permanent installations, and everything in between! Not everyone wants to make a permanent design change, and that’s why I enjoy working with decorative metallic accents.
Think brass vases, candlesticks, bowls, picture frames, and other accessories that let us introduce warm golden tones without renovating an entire space. You can move them between rooms, pair them with different furnishings, or swap them out as your personal style evolves.
These smaller pieces are especially appealing because you can experiment with how much metallic color you introduce. You can also move them from room to room, keeping your home fresh and alive with changes to your decor, big or small! One substantial decorative piece may feel right for your living room, while a collection of smaller accessories can create a more interesting arrangement elsewhere. Remember, trying an accent color in an unexpected place can change how we experience an entire space without requiring an extensive redesign!

When deciding how to incorporate brass into your home, consider how much attention you want the metallic finish to receive.
A permanent installation, such as a tiled wall or an extensive use of brass fixtures, becomes an important part of the room’s overall color story. It can influence which paint colors, furnishings, and decorative materials will look best alongside it.
Smaller accessories give us more flexibility. You can introduce brass into a room that already feels complete, experiment with different finishes, and see how the golden tones interact with your existing colors. You can also play with different gold finishes, brushed golds, hammered surfaces, and high-shine brass. Adding different types of brass can be as much fun as experimenting with different accents around your home!
As I shared in my article about interior color palettes that tell your story, the most successful design choices reflect your personality rather than simply following what’s fashionable!
What I love most about brass is that it doesn’t have to be used in one particular way. It can become a permanent statement or remain a small decorative detail that makes you smile every time you walk into the room.
As a color expert, I encourage people to think of metallic finishes as part of their color palette story, not just as accessories added after the important decisions are made. And sometimes, that touch of gold is exactly what a room has been missing!
