The transition from summer to fall can be an exciting time; brilliant colors and nature-driven delights happen in each season. I, for one, cannot wait to jump into the deep end of fall and enjoy the season for all its worth! Fall foods, fall smells, fall comforts, fall sounds, fall sights, and of course, fall color palettes! Can you tell I’m excited?

Saying goodbye to summer can be a little bittersweet, but changing the seasons always gives me peace of mind that no matter what we feel in the moment, time passes, and change is beautiful and can bring us unexpected surprises!

In this article, I’m going to talk about some of the best ways you can embrace autumnal beauty and utilize fall color palettes in your home.

Fall Color Palettes: Classic Scenes to Borrow From

What do you see when you think about fall? What are the scenes, colors, and landscapes that cross your mind? For me, there are so many to choose from; as a color expert, it’s hard to pick; however, I do have some favorites!

It may be cliche, but I love the scenes and energy you get in rural areas in the fall, especially around farms, farmhouses, and beautiful countryside. I imagine myself waking up at my farmhouse on a mid-October morning. The foliage is at near-peak, and the most vibrant oranges, yellows, and reds are kissing the tops of the trees before they fall to the ground a few weeks later. The deep greens of the leaves are just about all but faded, but some leaves are holding onto their summer energy, so blips of green can be seen here and there. The sky is a soft pale blue with a few stark white clouds sprinkled in here and there.

These classic colors work in harmony and carry us from the colors of summer to the brilliant autumnal color palette. There’s a true warmth to all various hues of the season. If I have a cup of coffee and an apple cider donut on this imagined morning while sitting on the porch breathing in the crisp air, well, nothing on earth sounds better!

This scene paints a very classic and nostalgic vision of fall, but that’s ok! When a special and fleeting time of year rolls around, it’s quite alright to fall in love with the colors that make it special! The auburns, yellows, almond browns, and pumpkin oranges of fall look wonderful when brought into the home in tasteful ways – as an interior paint consultant; I’m always looking for new ways to bring fall colors into the home.

Bringing Delicious Fall Colors into Your Home

For a beautiful fall farmhouse color scheme, you can utilize exposed woods, mustard yellows, and greens, as well as a few deep reds for accents to set the stage for a traditional yet fresh fall experience!

Picture a reading room or entertaining room with a fireplace in the center. The room has creamy white trim, mustard yellow throw blankets over beige, blue, or cream-colored sofas, and soft pastel pumpkin orange candles adorned over exposed wood coffee tables and end tables. The lighting is soft and warm. No harsh whites are visible. This is perfect for entertaining or just spending a quiet evening with loved ones.

Classic fall color schemes work beautifully in kitchens as well. Without having to refinish your entire kitchen, a few quick and simple splashes of fall can make all the difference. Keep a basket of fresh green and red apples on your counter, keep fall floral arrangements on your dining room table, and even incorporate some old lanterns with bright pink and orange leaves inside to give an exuberant splash of fall color!

Fall Color Palettes You’ll Love to Live With

There’s a wide variety of colors and textures that are also great, and add even more to the fall color palettes introduced into your home! The deep brick reds and coffee browns of fall can be replicated with furniture, reclaimed materials, or if you live in a loft, you may have a brick wall to keep exposed.

Focus on selecting warmer, less bright hues as the rich golds, reds, and burnt oranges remind us of everything autumn! You can also dip into using rich fabrics like dark green or cordovan velvets that remind us of the coziness of the season.

How do you feel about fall? Fall color schemes? Are you interested in sticking with the classics or trying something new this fall!? Please share your stories and thoughts; I always love hearing from you!

  1. I’m always sad to see the end of summer, but I love your outlook on the changing seasons being a reminder that time passes and change is beautiful and can bring unexpected surprises. And of course, there are hot cider donuts, so I’ll embrace any fall color that camouflages the cinnamon sugar LOL

Love your comment Janet, if nothing else remember that the fall colors and delicious make the season a time to be savored!

Although I love summer, there is nothing like the changing leaves in the fall! I am obsessed with these colors!! Now if we could just skip right over winter and go straight to spring, I would be very happy 🙂

I am with you 100% Christie, at least we have Spring to look forward to!

  3. I always have a hard time letting go of summer, because I love greens and blues. But you just might have gotten me to fall in love with fall again. Beautiful descriptions and photos on how to embrace fall colors. I particularly love the photo of your farmhouse by the pond.

I also have a hard time letting go of summer Deborah, but the colors of autumn pull on my heartstrings every time!

  4. I wish summer hadn’t ended so quickly. Up here in Alaska, there is a beautiful golden color mixed with deep greens and some dark reds, but mainly a certain gold here that is different than the yellows I remember from New England. Our reds are mainly ground plants rather than trees. I love color, no matter what time of year so it’s all good!
