If you have a sunroom or enclosed patio and you’re looking for some creative sunroom paint colors or ideas, you’re in the right place!
Did you know that getting outside directly affects our mental health? Studies show that getting outside and closer to nature can boost your mood, improve cognitive function and increase your focus.
But what about those days that are just too hot to even think about leaving the house? What about when it’s rainy or cold or buggy?
An enclosed patio provides the perfect solution. It’s your perfect “outside” on the “inside” giving you those benefits of the outdoors alongside the comforts of being indoors.
I’m going to go over enclosed patio ideas & designs that will make your patio feel like a natural extension of both your home and the outdoors.
Let’s get started!
Enclosed Patio & Sunroom Paint Colors
To have your enclosed patio blend seamlessly with both your home’s interior and the outdoors, I would recommend choosing interior colors that align with your natural surroundings.
Various shades of blue, grey-blue, soft greys, off-whites, reddish-browns and soft greens are great options for enclosed patios. These allow the eye to assimilate the sunroom or patio as part of the home while reinforcing the connection between that space and the outdoors.
I would also recommend being careful when considering extremely bright & bold colors and patterns. Bold colors & patterns can distract the eye, making the enclosed patio appear smaller. Also distracting the viewer from looking to the beautiful view beyond your patio walls.
What makes a sunroom or patio unique is that you can also decorate with outdoor or indoor elements. In the room above, you can see furniture that is more outdoor-friendly, but that can change with the time of year.
Let the Sun Shine In
What makes this type of space unique is that the design of the space is open to the elements.
Large open windows, sometimes even windows that are completely open (without screens) all summer! I find the more open and airy the room is, the more you will be tempted to spend your time there. Feeling like you are surrounded by fresh air is a win-win in every design.
Follow Your Home’s Styling
It’s also fun and effective to align your enclosed patio designs and colors with your home’s other colors and design elements.
For example, if your outdoor walkways & your home’s exterior are made of brick, you could attempt to match that coloration or material in the patio as well to create a seamless extension of the home.
A unique way to add color is to paint your floor, also using a natural color as I discussed earlier. The floor in this room is a slate blue, illuminated by natural sunlight it adds a colorful base to the design of the room. It also allows you to add color in a unique place, without having to use soft furnishings in the space.
You can also work to match the design style and the colors with the home’s traditional styling. For example, mid century modern colors often feature browns, tans, earthy greens and maroon. Victorian house colors, on the other hand, historically feature contrasting and dark, saturated colors.
Aligning the enclosed patio with your current home’s colors is a great way to have the patio feel like a true part of the interior and the exterior simultaneously.

Furniture
The types of furniture that you choose to furnish your enclosed patio with will vary based on the type of patio you have.
If your patio uses screens, it’s advisable to get outdoor-friendly furniture that can withstand any of the elements that could make their way through the screens and into the patio. If your patio has glass, then you’re a bit more open to what types of furniture you could utilize.
Landscaping & Natural Elements
Now that you have some enclosed patio ideas for the inside, let’s turn our attention to the outside!
Along with the exterior paint colors that can follow the tips I went over in the last few sections, I highly recommend making some landscaping and natural additions to the patio to really bring everything together.
Flowers and plants on the outside edges of the patio are a great way to hide any support beams while adding natural elements to your home! Vines and greenery can add a lot of dimension and intrigue to the patio making it look like it’s settled within a lush and verdure forest.
Plants on the inside of the patio are great as well for a few reasons.
First of all, biophilic interior design elements like plants and natural elements have been shown to have positive effects on our mental health. These additions also reinforce the connection to the natural world outside… not to mention that patios can get some of the best natural sunlight in the home, making it a haven for your plant friends!

Great advice, Amy! And now I REALLY want a sunroom!! I’m making do with patio heater at the moment 🙂
Love your comment Janet, make sure to let me know when you add a sunroom to your home!
Terrific advice, Amy. And another idea for enclosed patios is to think about retractable awnings. They don’t completely enclose but they’re a great addition to a home and with space heaters can also work in the winter. They give any home more covered outdoor space..something needed right now!
Thanks Leslie thats a great idea! I will be sure to mention that as a feature in the future.
Love your thoughts – my screened-in porch is my favorite room of my home for about 6 months out of the year (Virginia).
You are lucky to 6 months out of your screened in porch, it’s always a challenge as to what is better, a screened in porch vs open patio. I was hoping to inspire everyone to create a space they love!
Great tips and really love the idea of the painted floor, which looks beautiful in your photo.
Such great tips. I love our porch and we’ve added a space heater to make the season last longer.
Amy, you always give really great advice. When we re-did our backyard, the Mister really wanted a sunroom however we opted for a much larger deck. I’m sure this winter I will be kicking myself that we do not have a sunroom!
We have a similar conflict in who wanted the sunroom, who wanted the open patio, somehow we will work it out so that we are both happy! Love your comment, thanks for stopping by and commenting Sheri.
My favorite part of your article was definitely the part where you discussed the options an enclosed patio can have when deciding how to experience the fresh outdoors properly. As someone who spent most of my life in the city, I want to have some way to enjoy the outdoor smells and sounds from the comfort of my own home while not being in too much danger. The way an enclosed patio sounds makes me think that this is perfect for us, so I’ll look for any contractors that can help me construct one and ask for their suggestions on what to use.
Thanks so much, I am glad you enjoyed reading this post!
I appreciate your explanation on how you can experience the best of both worlds with an enclosed patio. Getting a safe outdoor space for my entire family to enjoy sounds really worth it considering how many of us love to hang around and relax during vacation. To make that safer for all of us, I’ll contact a custom screen contractor that can help us get this patio going.
