Father’s Day is coming up soon and, as you probably know, getting dads presents is no easy task.
Not only that, but just like all people, men have different likes & dislikes, different hobbies and different personalities. Thus, there’s no one great gift you could get for the father figure in your life.
As a color consultant, you all know that my focus goes towards choosing the perfect color family, and tone or shade of each color. In my opinion, that’s just as important as the gift or item itself!
So, in this post, instead of listing off generic presents for you to choose from, I’m going to go over masculine colors that can please dads of all ages. Picking one of these masculine color palettes can help you show your love to the man in your life.
Let’s dive in!
For a traditional man in your life, why not opt for a traditional masculine color palette? Many “masculine” environments, clothing items and/or accessories feature burgundy, a rich cordovan and reds, browns and a variety of blues and greys.
Navy and red are more traditionally masculine often appearing in sports team logos, fashion, American traditional tattooing (another classically masculine practice) and more.
These are all safe and somewhat neutral masculine colors that can easily make their way into a number of gifts. Sweaters, hats, socks, outerwear and more can be easily found in these traditional colors.
If your father figure loves to be outside, go on hikes, go camping and take care of the lawn, opting for a nature-inspired color palette for him is an excellent way to show him that you really thought about what he would like.
Various shades of green, blues, darker browns, sandy beige and orangy-browns are some nature-inspired colors that you could consider. These would work in everything from exterior & interior paint colors for a tool shed to a succulent plant garden to even just a t-shirt.
Art is another option: landscape photos, paintings and sculptures can symbolize the outdoors he loves while incorporating natural and masculine tones.
Consider implementing biophilic interior design into his space. See some examples here.
Unlike some other generations, millennial dads tend to be a bit more relaxed when it comes to choosing colors for themselves.
In fact, one study found that millennial men are much more likely to rank in what we used to think of as feminine qualities, like selflessness & emotional strength, as more important than traditionally masculine qualities, like physical strength and physique.
Millennial colors for men tend to think outside the box of traditionally gendered colors, which means you can get a bit more creative with your color options.
Go for warmer metallics like bronze, gold and silver for the trendier guys in your life. Other great millennial colors that align with more flexible masculinity include shades of purple, both bright and soft yellows, bold neons and pastel greens & blues.
Millennials are also drawn towards minimalist color schemes & palettes, which actually aligns quite well masculine colors like beige, shades of grey, black and browns.
It’s nice to see as time has gone on more and more men feel comfortable exploring colors outside of the more traditional gendered options of the past. “Let your true colors shine through,” as they say!
There’s a wide range of colors that are not actually feminine, but they have been given that identity over time. Using these colors does not imply that men who use them are in touch with their feminine side, if these are their colors, show them you love them with some more traditionally feminine colors!
This doesn’t mean that you have to go all pink… unless that’s what he likes, that is! But there are other ways to find feminine-leaning masculine colors to perfectly represent this man in your life!
Softer blues and greens would be my go-to choice along with other “softer” hues of masculine colors. This could also be lighter greys, rose gold instead of bronze, oranges and reds with pink tones and lavender are just a few examples of what you can do here.
Generally, these colors are lighter, rather than being heavy and dark.
Taking the time to really think about your loved one’s likes and dislikes is the perfect way to show them that you care.
Even just by reading this article, it shows that you want to give the man or men in your life something that really suits their personality and something that they’ll really love. I’m sure that above all they’ll appreciate all of the love and thought that went into whatever you give them, and they might even notice the colors you chose that made that gift even more personal!
