Our bedrooms are more than just a place to sleep. They are an interesting reflection of our personalities for sure. From the decor we choose to the interior paint colors, to the type of bed linens and decor around the room, bedrooms are one of the most important rooms in the home for relaxation, comfort and, of course, personal aesthetic.
If you’re not in love with your room as it currently looks, a master bedroom makeover could be very rewarding for you!
Don’t worry, though. This doesn’t need to become a huge project where you tear down walls or call in a contractor.
Doing a bedroom makeover with just changing the colors is a whole lot more fun if you are inspired!
Creative Inspiration!
For inspiration, look for anything truly remarkable, something that really catches your eye! It can be an exotic new rug or fabric for new window treatments. What I find inspiring for a design is a colorful piece of artwork or dramatic photography. If you find a piece that really makes your heart sing, it can inspire you to move forward with making changes in the entire room, whether those changes are big or small.
You can see in the photo that this particular piece of artwork makes a bold color statement! By adding this one piece, it gives you a color to add in other places around the room.
As you can see, a complete master bedroom makeover can be done by simply changing a few of your design choices. Keep reading to learn a few ways I recommend doing this!
Let’s Start With the Walls
Whether you are starting with a single piece or inspiration or not, a simple way of starting this process is to redo the colors of the walls in your room.
A simple option that can have a huge impact is repainting the walls with a color in the same family, but a version of your present wall color. Choosing a lighter or darker color will add interest and excitement to your room. A fresh coat of paint can breathe some new life into the room and help you remember why you might’ve liked that color family in the first place!
You can choose a much darker color for an accent wall behind the headboard, or paint the remaining walls a lighter color instead. If you want a true makeover, though, a complete re-painting of the room with a brand new color or going for a trendy accent wall can completely transform the entire room.
Choosing colors very different to the current ones will have the most dramatic “makeover” effect: from a light blue to a darker navy, from maroon to blush, from neutrals to bold colors, simply changing the color can give you the exciting change you might be looking for.
However, any interior paint consultant will tell you to choose colors that you can imagine yourself liking in the long term. Don’t get too caught up in picking something just because it’s trendy.
This is your bedroom aka the room you spend a good majority of time in when you’re at home. Choose something that’s modern and something that aligns with your personal aesthetic. For inspiration on modern color choices and aesthetics, check out my recent blog post on colors for 2020 here.
I highly recommend choosing a color for your bedroom that makes your heart sing!
Color that Goes Beyond Walls!
Paint color can make a much bigger impact on your room than you might initially think.
Think about it: the trim around the door, the door itself, your headboard, your windows and more can all be completely transformed with a fresh coat of paint.
Dark trim is unique and can add a feeling of elegance and classic design to a room. If you want a more open or airy aesthetic, consider a fresh neutral color or cream or perhaps some soft pastels of yellow, blue green or a grayish blue.

Soft Furnishings to Warm Your Heart
If you don’t want to take on a DIY paint project or you would prefer not to deal with painting at all, there are plenty of other options for adjusting your master bedroom’s color scheme.
Start with one of the focal points of the room: your bed! A new blanket, comforter, duvet cover, sheets and pillowcases can all have a huge impact on the overall look of the room itself.
Consider changing the blankets, linens and decorative pillows seasonally to reflect what you love about each time of year.
From the rich & dark colors of winter (like cranberry or forest green) to the airy and bright colors of summer (like cream or light blues), blankets and linens are a great way to switch it up without the commitment of a new paint color.
Decorative Elements to Spruce up the Room
Is there a focal point in the room like a piece of art or handmade design element? Thinking about changing the artwork as I said earlier might be a great way of giving you new color inspiration for your new look!
Other accessories like the decor in the bedroom also contribute to the color scheme of the room. Adding in a bright pop of color with colorful planters or simple plants on the bedside table or a new side chair or following biophilic interior design philosophy with naturally-made sculptures or plants are both great options.
Color is everywhere, which means that you can adjust color schemes by changing one of many things in the decor or your room. Your master bedroom makeover can be as energetic and dramatic, or soothing and peaceful as you prefer. Think of this makeover as an opportunity to redesign your space in a way that makes you love your bedroom all over again!
Whether you get a brand new dresser in a completely different color or you simply add up some photographs with striking images or bright pops of color, make one major change, and you will feel like you’ve made over your whole room!

Paint can absolutely make the biggest “bang for the buck”! My favorite color in my house is in my bedroom! I stripped VERY dated and what seemed like permanently attached (?!) wallpaper a few years ago and painted the room Ben Moore’s Palladian Blue. I love how the color changes with the light throughout the day – and I love every single iteration!
Thanks Janet, I have chosen Palladian Blue as well, and it is a color with a lot of life to it, great choice!
I love that you mention going dark with the trim! It’s one of my fave looks!
Thanks Rebecca, I have chosen dark trim several times, and it can be a great choice for some homes!

Thanks, Amy!

I am planning to redo my master bedroom, and paint is a must. It’s currently brown with oak trim – not my color palette at all. I would love to do a contrasting trim, but sadly, we have skimpy builder grade molding, so I like painting everything the same color so it disappears.
Hi Jillian, you can also do the trim color just one shade different to minimize it but still show that your room has some architectural detail. Either way new colors will be a great start for a makeover!
Amy, I totally agree with changing the paint colour and the impact it can make. I also love all of your other tips to create a calm master retreat.
Thanks Sheri, there are many ways of changing the colors in a room. 🙂
