Add Springtime Colors in Unique Ways: Part II – Pattern Inspiration

It might surprise you that some homeowners and even interior designers and color specialists have apprehension when it comes to using patterned color schemes. While I can understand why there is some concern with using patterned design schemes, I also think a significantly underused strategy, which can yield wonderful results!

For me, springtime is the best time to pull out the patterns and reinvigorate spaces within the home that seem “flat.” Patterns are an effective way to add dimension to a space without introducing new objects. In this piece, I will cover why I suspect there’s apprehension to use patterns more in color schemes and ways to add some patterned inspiration into your home this spring!

Springtime Colors: Pattern Anxieties

When I speak with clients or even other color specialists, I’m taken aback by how objectionable they can be to using patterns in their design schemes. It’s almost like there’s a “pattern phobia,” and they’re to be avoided like some sort of color plague! After I do a little digging, I understand that their objections to using patterns are related to their past overexposures. So, what does that mean? Let’s delve into the past a little.

For the better part of 50ish years, patterns were everywhere. They defined interior design schemes, especially between the 1950s through the 1980s—wallpaper, flooring, drapes, kitchenware, and so on. Like any good thing, oversaturation, overuse, and overexposure can create bad associations and negative connotations; this is unfortunate because patterned designs can be highly useful, and I know there’s a place for them in modern design.

Pattern Strategies to Try Out This Spring!

Springtime colors are perfect to work into patterned designs. The liveliness and invigorating energy of spring colors work in tandem with the aura/energy that pattered designs often intend to elicit. Here are some suggestions for you to try this spring!

  • Patterned Wallpaper

Patterned wallpaper doesn’t need to remind you of brown shag carpet at your great Aunt’s house; modern interpretations and design patterns are a far cry from what you may imagine. There’s a way to have color patterns with retro charm and forwarding-thinking design! I’ve seen many coffee shops, beauty parlors, and even trendy bars adopt patterned wallpaper with fantastic results so that bringing energy into your home is possible!

Picture walking into a cozy and inviting kitchen with yellow peach and creamy white wallpaper; the wall’s graphic patterns are star and sun silhouettes. The walls are friendly and warm, juxtaposed with stainless track lighting and kitchen appliances. Soft-white granite countertops and kitchen island complete the scene—the perfect place to start the day.

  • Patterned Accessories

While not everyone will want to complete a patterned wallpaper installation, there are ways to get patterns into your interior design without remodeling, and accent pieces/furniture accessories are a great place to start. For example, if your living room feels flat and neutral, add some blankets, pillows, or even a patterned accent chair or furniture to provide some dimension and life.

Picture walking into a study/hosting room with white couches and lounge chairs, Everything is in neutrals, but there are accent chairs that take that neutral color palette and add subtle blues, greens, or even textured throw pillows. Changing it up even just a little adds an element of contrast and interest to the room! This simple touch adds springtime color and a layered design element to the space!

  • Patterned Dish and Glassware

Call me nostalgic, but I just love patterned dishes and glassware. There’s a fun, playful nature that just says, “relax, don’t take everything too seriously,” but it’s also not cheap or hokey when done right.

Suppose you’re hosting a springtime luncheon or even an afternoon tea party! Picture a throwback, retro glass pitcher with lemons and limes designs, glistening against the afternoon sun as you laugh the day away with friends on the patio. It sounds like a great time to me!

Embrace Some Springtime Color Change!

Sometimes, embracing change and choosing alternative design elements are just what the doctor ordered to get a fresh start, and springtime is the perfect time for fresh starts.

Let me know what you think about patterns in design and how you plan to use them this spring!

  1. Great options for adding life to spaces with pattern. I’m finally warming up to wallpaper again – loving the flexibility of the temp papers.

I’ve always been big on white dinnerware for its flexibility but I like adding mismatched patterns in for interest.

    Patterns for spring!

I am also warming up to the temp papers Jeri, and it gives us the chance to change up our decor when we are so inspired! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  2. Great post, Amy! Even just one magic pattern can make a room sing!

I’m loving the return of wallpaper – nothing beats it for the instant transformative power, and using it in powder rooms is my favorite.

And yes to patterned dishes – while I always have a base of white dinnerware, I love mixing in patterned and vintage pieces to create a pretty and interesting table!

Bring on spring! And patterns 🙂
