Festive Home Lighting; It’s Not Just for the Holidays

Throughout this holiday season, between visiting shops, restaurants, and friends’ homes, I’ve come to appreciate festive lighting more than ever before. Festive lights bring so much energy and joy to an interior space. I thought to myself; it’s a shame that exciting, dynamic, and captivating lights cannot be used all year long, but then it hit me, why not? Let’s talk about making that happen!

Who says home lighting needs to be mundane and hold its place in the background? Why not allow home lighting ideas to take center stage and energize spaces in our homes all year long!? This stroke of inspiration has helped me develop this week’s topic; inspired home lighting ideas.

If you’re searching for some lighting design inspiration, this article is for you!

Home Lighting – What Can Be Done With Light?

For some people, it’s tough to step outside the mindset that lighting is a functional utility, no different from a heating radiator or a refrigerator. But home lighting can be so much more than that. Yes, lighting can illuminate furniture, art, or colors within a space, but sometimes, the lighting vessel itself can be an attraction, the eye-catching focal point of a space. The list goes on and on: floor lamps, hanging lamps, chandeliers, fixtures, and string lights; these types of lights can present themselves beautifully and add, not distract from, an interior design scheme.

Here are some of my favorite styles of home lighting pieces:

  • Rustic and Industrial Lighting

There’s something just beautiful and captivating about rustic/industrial-looking lighting. What do I mean by this? Think giant Edison bulbs hanging above a bronze bar top, each filament glowing the night away. Oil lamps with a hazy soft glow inside, sending warm cascading light over a remodeled farmhouse. It’s about the purity, not ornamentation of the lighting, that gives it such charm.

  • Precious Metals

Now, if you adore the sheen of refined metal, there’s a great opportunity to replicate that visual all over your home. I have lighting fixtures and lamps of different metallic presentations in my home: matte silver, sparkling metallic gold, and deep, earthy bronze and copper. They all look breathtaking and add a sense of purpose/gravity to whichever room they’re in.

Capture the Joy of Outdoor Holiday Celebrations

We imagine so many of us celebrating the holidays indoors with snow outside and the flurries of winter surrounding our homes. In reality, though, many of us are celebrating in warmer climates and decorating (and celebrating) outdoors.

When I started this post, I thought about the lighting that brings us joy and enjoying its use all year long. Are you decorating around a patio or outdoor space? Hang lighting from the pergola or between the wooden fencing, it adds exactly the holiday sparkle that I am talking about, and you can enjoy the festive atmosphere all year long!

  2. Such a great topic, Amy! Lighting is so important both functionally AND aesthetically! I love my patio string lights outside on the porch – we keep them up year round and have them on a timer to come on each evening. Whether we are outside or not, it always makes for a festive view 🙂
