As a homeowner, you may be in a conundrum by now, mid-summer. You want to make a design change but don’t want to go through the time and expense of an overwhelming project. You’re looking to make a change. Your creative side is itching for a home project, but you don’t know where to start. Adding some lawn flamingos or a new sprinkler isn’t going to cut it, so what do you do? All of a sudden, it dawns on you, of course! Let’s paint the front door!
Painting the front door of your home is a low-expense and relatively quick endeavor that can make a big difference in your exterior design’s facade. But what front door color ideas and design strategies make the most sense to your goals/sensibility? Here lies the challenge—what color to paint your front door?? You’re eager to make a color decision relatively fast, so let’s discuss the possibilities.
In this article, as your go-to color specialist, I will discuss some great front door color options from both sides of the design spectrum, from the loud and eye-catching to the subtle, refined, and elegant.
What Color to Paint Your Front Door? – Your Desired Emotional Response
The front door is a statement. Whether you want that statement to be joyful, fun, eccentric, and loud or prefer something more subdued, meditative, and refined, the point is to make a statement by choosing the perfect color. The front door of your home is the first place to welcome you back and invite others in – you want that to be an optimistic and friendly experience, not intimidating. Remember, loud doesn’t mean tasteless, and refined doesn’t mean boring – a welcoming balance can be found with either design strategy.
What Color to Paint Your Front Door? The Excited Options
Bold, vibrant colors can transform the entire vibe of your home’s exterior into something inspired, fun, and memorable. Here are some of the options to consider:
Teals
Teal has always been the cool kid on the block. It’s a stunning mix of blue and green that exudes a relaxed, beachy vibe while simultaneously having some electric presence. Pair it with contrasting light-colored trim and some potted plants, and you have a front door that says, “Welcome to my paradise!”
Bright Yellow
Nothing says sunshine like a bright yellow door. It’s impossible not to feel warm and even smile when you’re in the presence of this hue. Yellow doors are perfect for making a cheerful, eye-catching statement. What’s great is that sunshine yellows, depending on saturation points, can be warm off-whites, serving as a fantastic backdrop for seasonal wreaths at all times of the year!
Lime Greens
Are you feeling adventurous? Well, jumping headfirst into lime green colors is the way to go! It’s fresh, fun, daring, and unmistakably refreshing. This zesty color pairs beautifully with natural wood accents and lots of greenery—picture a home in the Arizona desert made from ironwood and aged from the harsh sun. Adding a lime green color will make this front door look like it’s bursting with life, making every return home feel like a much-needed splash of energy.
What Color to Paint Your Front Door? – The Subdued Options
Black with Sheen
A shiny black door epitomizes elegance; it’s classic, timeless, and luxurious. However, I highly suggest surrounding a black door with warmer, lighter, brighter accent colors to avoid creating an off-putting vibe. Black will always work beautifully with almost any house color, adding a touch of drama and sophistication – if that’s what you’re going for.
Midnight Blues and Greens
Midnight blue is deep, rich, and a bit mysterious. It’s a perfect choice if you want something different from black but still want to maintain an elegant aesthetic. Blue-blacks and green-blacks have the same appealing vibe. These colors can make your front door a focal point without being too overpowering. Midnight blue or deep green are popular staple Cape Cod house colors. They perfectly complement an oceanside design scheme and work beautifully with white trim and grey shingled siding.
Adding a Color with a Softer Touch
With every home I chose colors for, talking about the front door is an important conversation that happens at some time. Some want a door that is peaceful, extending the calm atmosphere of the inside to the outside. Some people want a door that doesn’t stand out at all, almost as if only people who know it’s there would be tempted to come inside. It’s not that they don’t want a friendly door color; they don’t want any color at all! Generally, this request comes from those with hectic, intense lives who savor the peace and quiet of their time at home! I get it, and I can choose a door color to make that happen for them. Think about this option when considering the color of your front door.
Stained Wood
A stained wood door is always a crowd-pleaser if you love the natural look. Stains can enhance the wood’s natural grain, adding warmth and character to your home’s exterior. It’s an excellent option for a timeless, charming, inviting look. Plus, it pairs well with almost any color palette and architectural style. To be candid, this may be my favorite front door design option for any time of year, as it can work with any supporting colors you put around it! Natural wood, veneer, or even faux woods (which they do beautifully these days) can be relaxed or refined. It can be whatever you need it to be.
A Bit of History to Make You Smile!
A classic choice for the front door is a brilliant red. It’s a classic color and is certainly popular among people from all areas of the country. The legend is that earlier in this country’s history, painting one’s door red implied that your mortgage was paid off. I don’t know how many of us want to brag about that (even if it was true). Imagine painting our front door a color that sends that message, but it’s fun to think about how times have changed since then!
Embrace Some Summer Change!
In the height of the dog days of summer, a little change can go a long way to reinvigorate your passion for design and self-expression; painting the front door, while not as easy as swapping out throw pillows, will reward you with a fresh look and perspective to take you through the rest of the summer and into the early fall.
So, what do you prefer? Are you willing to try something new, exciting, and eye-catching, or would you rather have your front door be more subdued and save the more inspired expression for your interior design? Please share your thoughts; as a career color expert, I always love hearing them!
I love the variety of options for a front door! The choice should always say a bit about the personality of the occupants, I think! I love a classic, elegant, glossy black door for myself, and it makes the perfect backdrop for seasonal door decor as well 🙂
Yes that is so true Janet and. glossy front door is a crowd pleaser every time!
What a fun article (and right in time for that “summer change”)! Thanks for this creative look, Amy…and what a great thing to change out so easily…I suppose, if someone really wanted, they could change the color of their front door more frequently than just about anything else we paint in the home!!
Yes that is right Robin, and changing out the color of just your front door can make such a difference! I’m glad you enjoyed this weeks blog post!
I have an orange door but teal is sounding good after reading your fun post! So many excellent suggestions!
